CM V Narayanasamy vows to protect Pondy students in medical PG seats

The CM’s remarks came when AIADMK member A Anbazhagan brought to the notice of the house that the fee committee had fixed Rs 3 lakh as tuition fee in private medical colleges for government quota. But the management was not willing to accept the same and admit the students and the latter were now in trouble. He also said that he had given an adjournment motion on the issue and wanted to know when it would be taken up. 

The issue was raised in the House at the end of the day and health minister Malladi Krishna Rao said that 76 students, who attended the first counselling, had selected in their colleges. However, the medical colleges were not ready to accept the tuition fee of Rs 3 lakh and he along with the CM would take up the issue with Union Health Minister JP Nadda. 

Intervening Rao, the CM said that the fee committee was set up by the Madras High Court. The admission and fees Committees were under judges and the government got powers only to select students through the centralised admission committee. In this case, the medical colleges were warned that their NOC would be cancelled if they failed to admit the students selected in the first counselling.

Charging that the government was giving priority to the welfare of private colleges than that of the medical PG students, the Puducherry unit of the CPM cautioned that if the government failed to take steps on the issue, the party would organise agitation against the government. In a statement, the CPM said the directions of the court and the MCI guidelines were being ignored due to the ‘nexus’ between the ruling party and private medical colleges.
