In a letter dated June 21 addressed to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Puzhal prison superintendent, Pais (convicted offender No.4552) said that he had completed 26 years in prison, on June 11. In the letter, he wondered why the past and present Central governments were opposed to the State’s move to release him.

This move had been supported by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, political parties, local people and the Tamil diaspora. “Though Justice Wadhwa in his 1999 judgment declared that I was innocent, life in prison for 26 years has caused me great pain,” he remarked. In conclusion, he said, “I request mercy killing and want my body to be handed over to my relatives.”
