Eight of the arrested protesters, including Jayaraman, had applied for bail as they claimed that the June 30 protest against the ONGC at Kathiramangalam village was conducted with proper permission.

Only policemen incited violence by way of a lathi charge, they said. However, the public prosecutor argued that the arrested protesters instigated the villagers by spreading false information against the ONGC and in the protests three policemen sustained injuries.

Even one of the injured policemen is still in the hospital and hence bail should not be granted to them. Following the arguments, the orders in the case were reserved by the High Court. In the meantime, Thangvelu (97), father of prof Jayaraman, passed away owing to illness on Saturday.

Jayaraman, who was lodged in the Tiruchy Central Prison, moved a fresh bail petition seeking permission to conduct his father’s final rites.  In the petition, he had stated that he was the only son to his father and had to perform the final rituals.

Following that his bail petition was accepted and heard by a special judge Nisha Banu on Sunday. Though the additional public prosecutor argued that the investigation for the cases against Jayaraman was at the initial stages and bail should not be granted to him, Justice Nisha Banu called up Judge AM Basheer Ahamed, who had reserved the orders in the first bail petition, over phone and obtained his consent to grant interim bail for Jayaraman. Then Justice Nisha Banu granted an interim bail to Jayaraman till July 26 to complete the final rituals of his father.
