The Centre brought in the initiative, ‘One nation, one ration card’ that would help consumers buy the registered items using the card from any fair price shop in the country rather than buy a new card each time they move to adifferent locality.
Under the initiative, the eligible beneficiaries would be able to procure their entitled food grains under the National Food Security Act from a ration shop from any part of the country.
To kickstart the procedure in Thoothukudi, the Collector Sandeep Nanduri visited a fair price shop at Korampallam and inspected the proceedings.
Speaking to the media present, the Collector said that four consumers from different parts of Tirunelveli bought commodities from the shop. Thoothukudi comprises of nearly 4,93,842 family card holders who rely on 957 shops present in the district. Among these, the fair price shop at Korampallam alone has nearly 1,246 card holders.
Consumers who avail the scheme would receive the registered items from the fair price shop such as rice, sugar, palm oil, etc.
Apart from that, in a bid to prevent misuse of the card, a SMS alert would be sent to the consumers’ phone aftertheir purchase.
The Collector added that purchase of commodities on pilot basis would continue for two months and based on feedback, would be implemented inother districts.
