EPS announces welfare measures for TN minorities

In the backdrop of anti-CAA protests by various Muslim outfits for about a week, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a slew of welfare measures for minorities and economically backward sections of the society in Tamil Nadu.

In his announcement through the 110 statement in the State Assembly, Palaniswami said that under the Ulema pension scheme, which is being implemented since 1981, poor Pesh Imams, Mothinars, Arabic Teachers, Mujawars who have served and retired after rendering service in Tamil Nadu Waqf institutions were paid Rs 1,500 as pension and this would be increased to Rs 3,000 per month.


Pointing out that at present a total of 2,814 registered Waqf board offices were functioning in the State, he said all the Ulemas, who work in the board, will be granted either Rs 25,000 each to purchase a two-wheeler or half of the rate of the vehicle.


Stating that more than 4,300 people took the Haj Pilgrimage last year, Palaniswami said the State government will construct a building in Chennai at a cost of Rs 15 crore where pilgrims could stay and carry out passport and visa related work for the Haj journey. More on P6
