Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants’ Association secretary P Sukumaran said the prices decreased two weeks ago after the market received more vegetables than usual. “But we are hopeful that from next week, the prices will increase as the season for second crops will commence and there will be shortage of supply of the earlier crops,” he said.
Currently, the onions are being sold for Rs 15 – Rs 30 per kg, tomatoes for Rs 15 per kg, beans Rs 15 – Rs 20 per kg, carrots Rs 20 – Rs 25 per kg, cabbage Rs 8 – Rs 10, radish Rs 10, and beetroot for Rs 8 – Rs 10 per kg. Flower vendors in the market, too, are dealing with price fall. Unlike the case of vegetables, the price is not expected to rise in the coming two months as there are no festivals or auspicious days for weddings.
“Along with the fall in prices last week, the sale has also decreased. Moreover, there is no wedding season in the coming days. So the prices will remain the same for the next few months as the season for all the flowers have started,” said Koyambedu Malar Podhu Vyabarigal Sangam secretary S Mookaiya.
Now jasmine is being sold for Rs 150 – Rs 180 per kg, pink jasmine for Rs 180 – Rs 200 per kg, tuberose Rs 60 – Rs 75, damask rose Rs 70 – Rs 80 and rose Rs 80 – Rs 100.
However, the fruit prices have been remaining stable for a week, said traders at the market.
