Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu will soon have ventilator manufacturing clusters, as automobile giants based in Chennai are working on the final prototype. “Two manufacturing units have sought approval from the Industries department. The ventilators will be rolled out by next month,” said V Arun Roy, special secretary, Industries department.
“Major companies like Hyundai, Trivitron and Air Liquide are working on the equipment required for Intensive Care Units. In the first phase, 1,000 ventilators are expected to be produced between June to July,” he said.
Garment manufacturers in Tirupur have started manufacturing PPEs, with South India Textiles Research Association and few others going global with European Union certifications, Roy added.
A team of engineers from Ashok Leyland have developed low-cost ventilators. Testing, certification and clinical trials are at different stages, and mass production is expected to start by the end of the month.
“As on date, most of the ventilators and PCR test kits are assembled after importing parts from China, US and Germany. Now, Indian companies have started focussing more on the healthcare equipment. Subsidiaries of Tata have also expanded the manufacturing of PCR and rapid test kits,” said S Elangovan, a leading drug and pharma dealer in Chennai.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had appealed to manufacturers to boost the production of medical equipment like ventilator, N95 masks and medicines in Tamil Nadu, announcing a series of sops, including interest-free investment subsidies.
