As the School Education Department could not conduct manual NEET coaching classes to the students due to total lockdown, the online classes were launched from June 15.
A senior official from the Directorate of School Education told DT Next on Monday that more than 20,000 medical aspirants studying in Class 12 in state-run schools across all the districts have registered for online coaching.
Stating that the government has tied up with a private company to give online coaching to the students, he said online classes were conducted in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
“With one-hour classes for each subject, students get four-hour coaching on all weekdays,” he added.
“More than 90 per cent of the students, who have registered for NEET online classes, have laptop computers, that was distributed by the government free of cost in 2019,” the official claimed and added that the government also ensured that rest of the students, who could not receive free laptops, could also get access to online classes.
S Vignesh, a medical aspirant in a government-aided school at Pallavaram, who joined online NEET coaching, said that he received a free laptop computer from the government during the last academic year and the computer was very useful to get virtual training for NEET entrance.
“I get the internet connection to my laptop through mobile data,” he said adding “my laptop has all the facilities to access NEET online classes.”
Similarly, K Geetha Lakshmi, a Class 12 student in a government school at Tambaram, said that her laptop computer was not only useful for online NEET coaching, but also handy to download NEET related information. “My classmates, who also registered with online NEET training are also getting benefited through their respective laptop computers.”
The government official further added that students getting online NEET coaching from other districts have also reported that they were also benefited by the free laptop computers. The NEET exam has been reschedule across the country on July 26.
