Contractor loses work, attempts self-immolation at Salem Collectorate

A 46-year-old construction contractor attempted self-immolation in front of the Collectorate in Salem on Sunday after the contract awarded to him to build toilets in a village was scrapped by panchayat officials.

According to police, Rajan from Jalagandapuram was into building toilets on behalf of various panchayats on contract. It is said that he had secured the contract for building toilets at Ilavampatti panchayat. However, a panchayat official had scrapped the contract given to him and awarded it to another person. Following this, Rajan alleged that he had incurred heavy loss as he had already bought construction materials for building the toilets. He attempted suicide by pouring petrol brought in a can. However, the cops on duty acted swiftly and prevented him from taking the extreme step. He was then taken to the police station for an inquiry.
