More than hundred students have been pursuing education at the Panchayat Union Middle school located at Thulukka Viduthi near Peravurani in Thanjavur district and the students have no adequate classrooms in the school and they were forced to take lessons either in the corridor or open ground.
Villagers approached several officials to construct an additional building to ensure availability of classrooms for all the students. Finally, they approached the School Education Department and and submitted a petition appealing to sanction fund for the construction of the additional building.
However, the villagers received a reply from the government that the department would follow the seniority system which is mandatory for a school to avail funds.
Dejected villagers convened a meeting in this regard in which the youths suggested the idea of crowd funding for it. Enthused by it, the elders accepted the idea.
The youths in the village then approached the residents and those working abroad for the same. Initially they could muster Rs 4.5 lakh and with that they went ahead with the foundation stone for the new building on Friday.
One of the coordinators said, if the school reopen after the COVID-19 pandemic, the condition would be worse. So we decided not to wait for government funding and initiated steps to construct additional building.
