CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Union government for announcing the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 denomination currency notes from circulation and said it was a political ploy to cover up the BJP’s miserable failure in the recent Karnataka Assembly polls.

Reacting on social media to what is dubbed as the second demonetisation move of Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Union government, Stalin, in a loaded political message posted on his Twitter handle, said, “500 doubts, 1,000 mysteries and 2,000 errors. A ploy to cover up the miserable failure in Karna- taka (Assembly polls).”

CM Stalin posted his critique of the currency withdrawal with the hashtags #2000note and #demonetisation.

Less than a day ago, Stalin’s MP sister-cum-DMK deputy general secretary M Kanimozhi hit out at the ruling BJP by posting an image of a Rs 2,000 currency note with the message, “He who creates, he who destroys.”

Shortly after the Reserve Bank of India notified the withdrawal of the currency note, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said, “Rs 2,000 note was never a ‘clean’ note. It was not used by the vast majority of the people. It was used only by people to keep their black money, temporarily.”

Recalling the introduction of Rs 500 note weeks after demonetisation in 2016, Chidambaram said, “I shall not be surprised if the government/RBI re-introduced the Rs 1,000 note as well. Demonetisation has come full circle.”
