“Having done several romantic and comedy films, I thought I should explore some serious roles as well. That is when Lockup happened. SG Charles, the director of the film believed that I would be apt for the role because this would have been another runofthe-mill character if a hero who had played such characters previously had donned the role,” he says.

After hearing the narration, it was his co-star in the film, Venkat Prabhu, who was the go-to-guy. “VP knows what would click and what doesn’t. When he read my portions he asked, ‘Epdi da unaku indha maadhri line laam maatudhu’ (How come you get well-penned lines for your portions?) and then we asked if he could play the other pivotal role. He told us that the audience would think that it will be another comedy film if we are a part of it. But no, this is a serious film with twists and turns to the plot and there is nothing positive about me or VP in Lockup,” he adds.

However, he reveals that shooting for the film was fun. “We couldn’t control our laughs before and after the takes. We ended up cracking jokes and you know that is how we are off the camera,” he quips. The film will premiere on Zee 5 on August 14. Vaibhav says, “I am fine with my movie releasing on an OTT platform. But any day theatrical releases are bigger for any actor, how big or small they are. Going to theatres with friends and family and watching it on the big screens is a different experience altogether. Now due to lockdown, we have come to your mobile screens. When Kamal Haasan sir did this way before we could even think of it, everyone was upset about his decision. Now we all are watching films in home theatres and mobile screens,” he concludes.
