After a rare blip in his career, Superstar Rajinikanth returned with a bang to re-emerge as the biggest draw at the box office.

The last five years have been nothing short of spectacular – since 2016, he has brought in an astonishing Rs 1,763 crore in just five outings consigning the lean period into insignificant memory. Little surprise then that the actor is considered the blue chip among those investing in Tamil films.
A look at the top grossing in Tamil film industry in the last five years reveals that 5 of the 10 films that set the collection ringing since 2015 had Rajini in the lead role.
The film that set record was the much-awaited 2.0 in 2018, the second iteration of Enthiran, which grossed a whopping Rs 787 crore worldwide. Interestingly, even after dwarfing all others by a large margin, the actor had a second film in the same year that collected more than Rs 100 crore – Kaala, that earned around Rs 173 crore.
The second highest collecting film in the last half a decade was Kabali (2016) that grossed Rs 350 crore. The third rank belongs to the 2019 film Petta (Rs 233 crore), which had Rajini in lead, so was the fourth, Darbar (2020) that collected Rs 220 crore.
In between, he had no films in 2017. That year, younger stars Vijay – Mersal that collected Rs 205 crore – and Ajith – Vivegam that collected Rs 152 crore – performed handsomely in the BO. Among other top grossing films are Ajith’s 2019 film Viswasam (Rs 202 crore) and Vijay’s 2016 film Theri (Rs 124 crore).
