The Thiruvalluvar street in Srinivasa Nagar in New Perungalathur, which comes under Perungalathur town panchayat, is one of the important roads in the area. There are places of worship, including a Jain temple and Karumariamman temple, a branch of the State Bank of India and a community hall located on the street. In addition, there are two private schools on one of the seven cross streets.

According to local residents, the school students who take the street every day suffer while travelling on auto-rickshaws due to the bad condition of the road. What has irked the residents and commuters is the alleged indifference of the municipality officials despite bringing the complaint to their attention multiple times over the years.

“It’s really hard to ride on the street on the two-wheelers, as they skid very easily,” said Praveen, a resident of the street. The residents added that the drain that carry storm water from the street is also in urgent need of reconstruction. Because the drain is broken at several places, rainwater is flowing on the street during the monsoon.

However, when contacted, L Ravi Kumar, Executive officer of Perungalathur Town Panchayat said though the initial process for repairing the road was started, they would not be able to go through with it because of the declaration of general election and the model code of conduct coming into force. “Once the election gets over, the repair work will start,” he assured.
