Reporter’s Diary: Outlet employee stumps ‘undercover’ Tasmac official

As this reporter had frequently complained to Tasmac officials about fleecing by retail outlet staff, an official called the reporter to give a piece of spot information about the initiative taken by his department to end the menace.

When this reporter met the authority near the Tasmac main office, the official took him to a nearby liquor shop and showed that a Point of Sale (POS) machine has been installed there.

He then wanted to make the reporter see how the device works in the liquor shop and also claimed that once POS has been installed, there will not be any overcharges.

The official, who did not reveal his identity to the salesman at the outlet, just monitored the POS sales along with the correspondent. A consumer purchased a bottle of beer of a particularly popular brand using his debit card.

A big surprise and shock came to not only for the consumer but also to the official after the salesman, who instead of charging Rs 120 for the beer, entered an additional Rs 10 and took the PIN. And the cash transaction was over in less than a minute.

When the official, still hiding his identity, tried to ask the salesmen why he charged an additional Rs 10 for the POS transaction since every rupee is accountable, the salesman dared the official to complain anywhere.

Adding to the official’s woes, the liquor shop employee also said he was doing this under the instructions of his higher authorities.

The official, who was visibly disappointed, promised to take action against the salesman shortly but his comment didn’t seem convincing at all.
