Slice of Life: ‘Being unemployed and waiting for opportunity is tough’

M Manoj Kumar (29), Aspiring filmmaker

    Chennai

I am from Pollachi and I wanted to be a filmmaker from my childhood. So I chose Visual Communication for by undergraduation to learn about movie making. While my classmates opted to take jobs after graduation, I joined MGR Film Institute in Chennai to gather more information. Though the time I spent there was useful, I had to survive with little help from my family. I approached several reputed film directors for an opportunity to work as assistant director. But, I could not get a chance. So I joined as assistant cameraman with a reputed cinematographer. Thus, I learned film making and learned camera techniques, too. I was also writing script for my first movie at the time. As staying in the city needs money, I participated in story discussions and thus paid my rent and food expenses. I completed my degree eight years ago but still waiting to be a filmmaker. I don’t want to take up any other job. Being unemployed and waiting for an opportunity is a tough situation. Even my family asked me to take up any job to help them. But I am firm in my decision. I have a completed script with me. Currently, I am not working with director or cameraman. I am meeting producers to seek an opportunity to make my first film.
