The residents further claimed that there is a bin placed in front of a college in the locality and sanitary workers ignore to clean the garbage from it even after the college management registered a complaint regarding this.

“We have complained to the Corporation officials and requested for the waste to be cleared from the road regularly, but the sanitary workers choose to walk away,” said Vaishnavi K, a resident of AI Block, Second Street. She added that the college management has to keep the windows and doors of the classrooms closed at all times to keep the stench out. The rotting garbage poses a health hazard and many students have already fallen sick, she added.

Residents said that stray dogs come in large numbers to the areas due to the presence of food in the garbage. Residents, especially unaccompanied children are scared to cross the area. When the issue was taken up with the authorities concerned, they promised to take action but nothing has happened till date, residents said.

“The piling garbage has not only worsened the locality’s hygiene but has also increased mosquito menace. Besides, the stench and mosquito breeding, cattle can be seen feeding on the garbage mounds and they spread the garbage on the road. Several children were hospitalised due to these unhygienic living conditions. The officials must act fast and clean the area as soon as possible,” Sudharshan MR, another resident of AI Block, Second Street, said.

Residents said that they are not responsible for the condition they are living in. They are said to be discarding garbage responsibly into the waste bins kept in the locality. But motorists and pedestrians who pass by dirty the area by littering the road.

When contacted, a Corporation official said, “Sanitary workers collect garbage from every house and clean the entire street. We have not received any complaints from the residents so far. We ensure to clear the waste.”
