Living the i life: ‘Baking is a therapeutic experience'
The ongoing lockdown has forced many of us to alter the way we go about our daily routine. Chennaites share tales of the changes they have made to adapt to the new ‘normal’ of living and working with limited interaction.
Chennai
I’ve actually started enjoying the lockdown. In the beginning, I was worried because I had just opened my bakery in February and we had to close because of the shutdown. But now I’m interacting with the customers, and it’s more personal. It feels like we are friends. Even if customers ask for any supplies like milk or butter, we deliver. I, now, bake only two days a week. So I get to sit down, read, watch some shows now. I am watching this Swedish show called The Restaurant. I’ve reached this point where I’ve finished watching everything and so now I’m looking for new shows. That’s how I shifted to Scandinavian Netflix using a VPN blocker to see new shows. I have a dog at home. He’s so happy because I’m home all the time. I haven’t been able to experiment with recipes because I still am working two days a week and prepping two days a week. I’ve been thinking of ideas to help my customers. We make a lot of bread and baked goods, so we’ve been preparing bread spreads and supplying salad leaves like basil. I even supplied eggs to the customers during the first few days of the shutdown. For me, because I’m able to get out of the house and go to the shop, I’m able to stay sane. If I was cooped up at home, I would be going mad. I’ve been going to the shop and baking and that’s always been a therapeutic experience.
