Math teacher sets world record by solving six Rubik’s cubes under water
Illayaram Sekar’s love for Rubik’s cube started six years ago. Two years later in 2016, this Math teacher at Kaligi Ranganathan Montford MHSS, Perambur, set the Guinness World Record for solving 700 Rubik’s cubes in 6 hours 19 minutes while cycling continuously without resting his foot on the ground.

Now, the 25-year-old has set another record by solving 6 Rubik’s cubes underwater in 2.17 minutes in one breath. “I have started practicing for this for the past two years. A 2.5 feet airtight water tank was built and placed in the school. I practice before and after school hours. Since I don’t know swimming, it was very important to control my breathing pattern. So, I started practicing pranayama. This helped to spend an extended amount of time underwater. Once I select any records, I start learning about the records. This record is one of the biggest categories because, in the last six years, nobody broke it. On August 1, 2014, Anthony Brooks solved five Rubik’s cubes underwater in one breath. Six years later, I broke his record by solving six Rubik’s cubes in the same category,” says Illayaram Sekar.
Talking about the challenges he faced while setting the record, the teacher shares, “Solving Rubik’s cube in a normal environment is easy. But doing it underwater is challenging. Since there is water force, it will slow down your move. You cannot rotate the cube in a fast manner underwater; it will take more time. Also, you are under constant pressure to set a record. While underwater, one needs to hold the cube very tightly. Otherwise, there are chances of the cube slipping from the hand and floating on the surface. If that happens, you will get disqualified.”
Illayaram also submitted another evidence to Guinness World Records — for solving 72 Rubik’s cubes in 26 minutes while hanging upside down. He is awaiting the response from the team.
