Home-cooked meals now an app away

While there are several apps that deliver food from your favourite restaurant to your doorstep, Chennai-based based entrepreneur Vijayalakshmi Ganesh and her team kick-started an app that allows people to order home-cooked food by connecting over 20 home cooks with the customers. 

“The idea came when I saw an elderly lady working as a part-time cook in a friend’s house. I wondered, why not enable her to cook at her own house and bring customers to her doorstep instead. This led to the inception of ‘Moremilaga’ – an app that makes available vegetarian home cooked food right at your fingertips. 

When Vijayalakshmi approached home chefs, they were delighted by the business prospect. “I started scouting within my friends circle, for people who might be interested in joining our platform. 

As the word got around, we received an overwhelming number of inquiries. We started off with a few cooks. In fact, most people who cook for Moremilaga today were initially our customers who turned home-chefs out of their passion for cooking,” she says, with a smile. Vijayalakshmi knows that to conceptualise an idea is one thing but to execute it effectively is an entirely different ball game. Putting in place a robust delivery system was of course a challenge.  

“The app is managed by my sibling and cousin. We have organised a delivery team and are supplying lunch on stretches between Poes Garden and Adyar (including Alwarpet, Mandaveli, Mylapore and Triplicane). It has grown into a neighbourhood app,” says Vijayalakshmi.
