    District details

    Also known as Namagiri, the district’s population is 17,26,601 as per 2011 census. The sex ratio of Namakkal is 986 and the literacy rate recorded in the district is 74.63 per cent. Namakkal city, with number of poultry farms, is known as Poultry Town as well as Egg City. Consisting of seven taluks, the district was carved out of Salem district in 1997. Out of six constituencies in the district, Namakkal has one ST (Senthamangalam) and one SC (Rasipuram) reserved constituencies. 

    Out of 530 NOTA polled in the district in 2011, Tiruchengode led with the maximum number (114) and, surprisingly, the reserved constituencies Rasipuram (SC) recorded 103. Senthamangalam (ST) witnessed 100 NOTA, though the remaining three general constituencies recorded less than a 100. AIADMK front had swept all the six constituencies in the district in last assembly poll. 

    AIADMK won in all four seats contested — Rasipuram (SC), Namakkal, newly-formed assembly segments Paramathi-Velur and Kumarapalayam — and DMDK won in the remaining two. 

    92. Rasipuram (SC) 

    Total No of voters: 1,94,596

    Votes polled: 1,62,217

    Polling percentage: 83.48% 

    Winner: Dhanapal P (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Duraisamy VP (DMK) 

    Margin: 24,717 votes

    Rasipuram became a reserved constituency (SC) after delimitation. Considered to be an AIADMK fort as it had won 7 out of 9 elections. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), ADMK (1996), ADK (1991) and DMK (1989).

    93. Senthamangalam (ST) 

    Total No of voters: 1,97,693 

    Votes polled: 1,61,295

    Polling percentage: 81.59% 

    Winner:Santhi R (DMDK)

    Runner-up: Ponnusamy K (DMK) 

    Margin: 8,505 votes

    Before being reorganised during delimitation, Senthamangalam (ST) constituency was a general constituency from 1971 to 2006. Being the most ST populated area of the district, in 2008 it regained its old status of ST reserved seat after 1967 elections. During the last eight assembly elections, AIADMK had won as many as six times and DMK held it only twice in 1996 and 2006. Winning parties: DMDK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996) and ADK (1991, 1989 and 1984).

    94. Namakkal

    Total No of voters: 2,06,748

    Votes polled: 1,69,649

    Polling percentage: 82.06% 

    Winner: Baskar KPP (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Devarasan R (KNMK) 

    Margin: 35,855 votes

    R Arunachalam of AIADMK won here for three consecutive times in 1977, 1980 and 1984. Was a reserved constituency for SC from 1977 to 2006 and became a general constituency after the delimitation in 2009. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), INC (2006), INC (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991) and DMK (1989).

    95. Paramathi-Velur 

    Total No of voters: 1,86,699

    Votes polled: 1,51,705

    Polling percentage: 81.39% 

    Winner: Thaniyarasu U (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Vadivel C (PMK) 

    Margin: 31,018 votes

    This newly formed Assembly segment was known as Kabilamalai assembly segment before the delimitation. Kabilamalai assembly segment had seen DMK MLAs in 1962, 1967, 1971, 1996 whereas ADK won in 1977, 1980, 1989 and PMK in 2001 and 2006. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

    96. Tiruchengode 

    Total No of voters: 1,82,669 

    Votes polled: 1,49,845

    Polling percentage: 82.10% 

    Winner: Sampathkumar P (DMDK)

    Runner-up: Sundaram MR (INC)

    Margin: 23,945 votes

    C Ponnaiyan of ADMK was a four-time MLA of this constituency in 1977, 1980, 1984 and 2001. Winning parties: DMDK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991) and CPM (1989).

    97. Kumarapalayam

    Total No of voters: 1,86,437 

    Votes polled: 1,60,955

    Polling percentage: 86.36% 

    Winner: Thangamani P (AIADMK)

    Runner-up: Selvaraju G (DMK) 

    Margin: 26,887 votes

    This newly formed constituency is carved out of Sankari and Tiruchengode constituencies. MLA of the constituency, P Thangamani held Revenue department as well as Industries and Transport minister post. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).
