    Joint raids by taxmen, flying squad at several places in Karur

    Sleuths from the Income Tax department along with the Election Commission officials conducted a series of searches in the house and establishments of DMK candidate KC Palanisamy who is the richest candidate in central region. The search that commenced at around 10.30 am went on till reports last came in.

    The 81-year-old KC Palanisamy, popularly known as KCP, secretary of the assets protection committee of the DMK and a leading businessman, contesting from Aravakurichi constituency in Karur district has declared assets worth Rs 107.41 crore, including Rs 57.59 crore as movable assets.

    Meanwhile, during the early hours of Tuesday, officials acting on a tip-off that KCP had stocked up cash in his establishments and house to be later distributed to voters, a team, led by Manikandan, Deputy Director of Income Tax (Elections) and flying squad official Jagadeesan, raided his house on Chinna Andan Koil Street in Anna Nagar and his Arasi lodge in Jawahar Nagar in Karur. 

    However, the details of the operation were not revealed immediately. The raid parties were continuing the search till reports came in last.

    Anbunathan’s aide

    In a simultaneous development, another team conducted a raid on the house of Sudarsanam, a close aide of the moneylender Anbunathan, at Ayyampalayam around 11 am.

    The team, led by income tax deputy Director Manikandan and Karur IT inspector Natarajan, searched the house of Sudarsanam, who is also managing the school run by Anbunathan in Coimbatore. The search was also going on till the evening.

    FIR on Congress nominee 

    Meanwhile, the JJ Nagar police in Chennai registered an FIR against Ambattur Congress candidate Hasan Haroon Moulana and four others for criminally intimidating and illegally detaining ‘Ilanjar Iyakkam’ leader Sukumar. Police registered the case following a complaint from Sudhakar, who alleged that Hasan Haroon Moulana and others barged into his house on May 7 and illegally detained him and his family, alleging that he had stacked up Rs 7 crore at his residence to be given to voters in favour of AIADMK. 

    The complainant alleged that the gang had passed this wrong information to the Election Commission and the IT sleuths and subsequently a raid was conducted at his house. However, the officials could not recover any money from his house. 

    The complainant has also urged the EC to ban Hasan from contesting elections.
