‘Kanniyakumari’ is now official spelling
The long-standing debate concerning the official spelling of ‘Kanyakumari’ district has finally been put to rest. In the wake of an NGO’s ongoing efforts, the district administration took the first step in recording its new spelling as Kanniyakumari.
Madurai
Ahead of the May 16 Assembly Election, the Collectorate at Nagercoil installed a plaque on the compound wall of its office with the district name spelt as Kanniyakumari.
According to sources, the old inscription bearing the name Kanyakumari was recently removed from the Collectorate’s plaque.
The order notifying the change has been passed to all other State government departments and they have been asked to incorporate the new spelling at the earliest. Instruction has been passed to Central government agencies and they have been asked to adopt the new name to avoid confusion in the future.
Sriram, the President of Consumer Rights Association, an NGO, that took up the issue many years ago says, “Kanyakumari was the spelling used in the TN official website and the Collectorate. But, the Railways use the name Kanniyakumari in both tickets and in naming trains. So, there was a confusion among people.”
