Errors in list for relief, say Uthapuram dalits

A group of Dalit residents from Uthapuram in Madurai district on Monday urged the district administration to suspend distributing compensation for victims of a caste-based clash alleging that names of several persons were repeated on the list.

In a petition submitted to Madurai Collector, they claimed that out of more than 600 families affected during the caste clashes in their village in 2008, only 191 families had been given compensation.

While the district administration had released the names of beneficiaries on the second list, several persons in the new list had already received the compensation amount. Hence they demanded the district administration to suspend the disbursal.

Apart from this, names of several deserving beneficiaries were missing on the list and a political party, which promised compensation for all, managed to get the relief amount only for their supporters, said residents.

Further they claimed that owing to the boycott protest by lawyers, they could not obtain a stay on the process through courts. Hence, the Collector should immediately issue an order to stop the disbursal of compensation, residents demanded. Earlier, their self-immolation bid inside Collectorate was foiled by the police.
