“Two yesteryear politicians were responsible for Cho’s fame. One was former chief minister M Bhaktavatsalam and another was late chief minister M Karunanidhi. When Bhaktavatsalam was the chief minister Cho enacted a famous drama against the government and an enraged Bhaktavatsalam banned it making Cho famous,” said Rajinikanth.

He also said that when Karunanidhi was the chief minister in 1971 Periyar staged a half-naked protest against Ramayanam and except for Thuglak no other magazine reported and criticized the ruling government. Karunanidhi ordered seizure of all the copies of the magazines and due to which it was printed in excess and sold in black market at a higher price.

The 50th anniversary of Thuglak was celebrated on Tuesday evening in the city. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu released the special golden jubilee edition of the magazine and the first copy was received by Rajinikanth.

After receiving the first copy, Rajinikanth said, “People who read Murasoli are identified with the DMK and those who read Thuglak are identified as intelligent people.”

Rajinikanth praised Cho Ramasamy for his passion towards journalism. “Cho is a genius. Cho created a race of people who read Thuglak in the last 50 years.”

    Worthy successor

Rajinikanth further said that in his final years Cho was worried about the future of his magazine after his death, but his natural choice was Gurumurthy, editor of Thuglak. “Ever since Gurumurthy took charge the originality of Thuglak is maintained in the last three years.”

When Rajinikanth’s fans were expecting some major announcements he said, “I do not have independence here to speak. There are lot of restrictions as vice president is present here. I will speak on a different occasion.”

Vice President appreciated Cho and recalled his earlier days of association when he invited Cho for his college function. “Cho is known for his political satire and showed that fearless journalism can be powerful.”

    PM: Thuglak educates people

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India was developing at a rapid pace and things that were seen as impossible were becoming a reality, but vested interests were trying to mislead the nation and cause unrest.
In his video address at an event held by Thughlak Tamil magazine here, the Prime Minister said his government’s decisions have helped further India’s economic and social integration.
Listing out the initiatives, including abrogation of Article 370, abolition of Triple Talaq and GST implementation, he said, “Today, as India is developing at a rapid pace and things that were seen as impossible are becoming a reality.”  However, a “... vested interest group is unable to digest the changes. They are trying their level best to mislead and cause unrest.  During such times, there was an increasing responsibility for a magazine like Thuglak to keep the people aware, just as its founder editor Cho would have done, he said.
