In what came as a shocking news, three people were killed and nine injured on Wednesday when a crane used at the ongoing shooting of Kamal Haasan starrer Indian 2, directed by ace director Shankar, at a private studio at the suburban Nazarathpet. The deceased were identified as assistant director Krishna, art assistant Chandran and Madhu, a production assistant, Lyca said in a statement.
When we contacted Angamuthu Shanmugam, General secretary of FEFSI about the safety protocols followed in movie sets, he said, "The crew used an industrial crane as a prop. When a scene of Kamal Haasan and Kajal Agarwal was being shot, the crane came down crashing and fell over the crew members. Immediately they were taken to a nearby private hospital”.
He added that the makers followed all the protocols and safety measures but missed to have trained professionals from FEFSI to handle the crane. "Industrial cranes are commonly used for top lights, but in most cases, people who are handling the crane are not trained for the environment of cinema shooting. While FEFS has a number of units to handle various things, makers often end up choosing the non-trained people due to time constraint and date availability. Members of FEFSI unit know how to handle these machines and they are trained for the environment of shooting. It was the biggest mistake and now we have lost our people".
The crew member who mishandled the crane is now under hiding and police are conducting search operations to track him down.
Actor Kamal Haasan, who is playing the lead role in the sequel, and the movie’s production company Lyca on Thursday condoled the deaths.
