Based on a complaint from Subaidha (42), wife of Sarbuddin, the city police have registered a case. “It looks like the call originated from Puzhal prison and it was certainly ‘Koolai’ Ibrahim, another Al Umma man,” police sources said, adding that Subaidha had lodged the complaint at the Sembium police station on Sunday.

According to the police, it all started when Subaidha lent Rs 2.5 lakh to one Latha Rajendran and Chandra Bose. It is alleged that the two, after receiving the money, showed no interest in returning the amount.

When Subaidha contacted them, they avoided her and indicated that they were not going to return the money. As she put more pressure on them last week, Subaidha received a call from ‘Koolai’ Ibrahim.

He identified himself and told her that he was calling from the Puzhal prison. He categorically told her that she should not trouble Latha and Chandra Bose. She was also warned of consequences if she continued to disturb the borrowers.

Shocked, Subaidha, lodged a complaint at the Sembium police station detailing the threat call she received from a convict lodged inside Puzhal prison.

Police sources said that criminals, including Coimbatore blast convicts, lodged in jails do manage to use mobile phones. This is despite a blanket ban on inmates using cell phones. Some of them even make mamool calls from inside the prison. Usually, no one bothers to lodge police complaints about such calls. But Subaidha, being the wife of Al Umma convict, decided to lodge the complaint, sources said.
