From friends of people to kin of departed, new duty for Khakhis

Over the past four weeks, police across the State, have been working out of their boundaries, including supplying groceries to villagers. Some officers had even helped farmers get their relief amount.

The incident happened when an inspector from Koyambedu police station admitted a man, who was around 55 years old, at the KMC after he was found unconscious in the market on March 26, a day after lockdown was imposed.

Later, he was identified as Shankar who was a resident of Kodungaiyur. “He used to do jobs in the vegetable market and used spend his days there,” a police official said. The police also traced his son and daughter, who were informed about their father’s status. “It looks like he had kidney ailment. He died on April 16 at hospital and his children were informed. However, his son and daughter said that they were not in a position to take body home. His son, Nandakumar, works as private guard but he has no job now due to the lockdown. As the family didn’t have money, they requested us to conduct the funeral. We decided to help them,” said Maatheswaran, Koyambedu Inspector.
