Big stores in city ordered to shut down from tomorrow
The Greater Chennai Corporation has ordered big commercial establishments in the city to shut down from Monday until further orders.

According to a Corporation official, an order has been issued to this effect by Corporation Commissioner G Prakash on Saturday. “It has been difficult to maintain social distancing in big shops, which sell multiple products like clothes, electronic items and furniture. Also, we could not effectively monitor such establishments,” the official said. On Saturday, the civic body workers made an announcement on autorickshaws in T Nagar asking the commercial establishments to shut down from Monday. The official added that such shops are located in T Nagar, Purasawalkam, Padi and other areas.
However, the official clarified that small shops and supermarkets across Chennai can function by following existing restrictions.
It may be noted that the civic body had ordered the shops in Ranganathan Street in T Nagar to shut after it found several violations a few weeks ago. But the shops were allowed to function after the shop owners promised to follow norms.
