Tirumazhisai mofussil bus terminus would become the fourth mofussil terminus of the city after Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Bus Terminus (Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus - CMBT) in Koyambedu, Madhavaram Mofussil Bus Terminus and Kilambakkam Mofussil Bus Terminus. While the first two are functioning, works on Kilambakkam terminus had already commenced.

“The project was proposed in the Assembly and we’ve prepared a feasibility report and detailed project report by appointing consultants. As the detailed project report has been finalised, we have floated tenders inviting contractors. The tenders will be finalised before the end of September,” an official said.

The official said the project has been proposed to decongest Koyambedu as thousands of Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses and mofussil buses are being operated from the CMBT. Also, the planning authority has already availed environmental clearance for the new bus stand.

As per the CMDA documents, Tirumazhisai terminus will be constructed at a cost of Rs 308 crore on 3.49 lakh sqm of land off Chennai–Bengaluru National Highway. It will accommodate 160 government buses and 85 omnibuses. Moreover, an MTC terminus has also been proposed under the project on a land parcel extending to 7.4 acres adjacent to the new mofussil bus terminus.

CMBT has 180 active bus parking bays, 60 idle parking bays and separate parking areas for city buses, while Madhavaram mofussil bus terminus has 42 active bus bays and 50 idle bus bays.

CMDA had already shifted northbound buses (towards Andhra Pradesh) to Madhavaram mofussil bus terminus. Once the Kilambakkam terminus is ready, buses to southern districts would be shifted to there from Koyambedu.
