After 6 months, Pallavaram Friday mkt back in action
The Friday market in Pallavaram is back in business, after shutting down nearly six months ago due to virus threat.
Chennai
One of the oldest markets in the country, the Friday market in Pallavaram has been functioning for nearly ten decades. The public used to throng the market every Friday for the electronic goods, fruits, vegetables, and all households that it offers at a very cheap price. From March 20, the market was closed due to the pandemic outbreak and on Friday the market was opened again after nearly six months.
The St Thomas Mount Cantonment board staff sanitised the area and also allocated a place for the shops, leaving some space in between. Local sources said while social distancing was followed in the morning, after 9 am it went for a toss after most of the shopkeepers arrived there. Public claimed the cantonment staff were not there at the spot to guide the shopkeepers in maintaining social distancing.
However, the usual crowd was missing as the public were not aware of the market reopening this Friday. Some of the visitors opined that from next week the police and government officials should give strict guidelines to the shopkeepers in maintaining social distancing.
