NEET results out: TN boy secures 8th rank pan India, State performs better

While Soyeb Aftab from Odisha bagged the top rank by attaining a perfect score of 100% and created a new record by scoring 720 marks in the examination, Srijan R, from Tamil Nadu scored 710 marks out of 720 and secured the eight rank pan India, while topping the NEET UG in the State with a score of 99.99%. Last year, none of the students from Tamil Nadu made it to top 50.

Akansha Singh from Uttar Pradesh secured the second rank, becoming the All-India topper among girls. She too scored 720, but Aftab has been ranked first and Singh second as per the NTA’s tie-breaking policy.

Two other students from Tamil Nadu, Mohanaprabha Ravichandran who scored 705 marks and G Swetha who scored 701 marks got a rank of 52 and 62 respectively.

The pass percentage of NEET aspirants has increased this year by at least 10 per cent, recording an overall percentage of 57.44 per cent in comparison to 48.57 per cent in 2019. The pass percentage in 2018 was 39.56, and thus, an increasing trend of NEET pass percentage is being witnessed in the State.

While officials from the Directorate of Medical Education said that students profited from the government and private NEET coaching centres, experts said that the exam was easier this year when compared to last year and thus the increase in pass percentage. Experts also said that it was likely that the cut off in the State will be high in all categories. This year, more than 22,007 students remained absent for the NEET exam in Tamil Nadu that was held on September 13, 2020 while a few students appeared for NEET Phase 2 on October 14, 2020. Last year, 15,919 students did not appear for the exam.

As many as 15,97,435 candidates registered for NEET across the country and 13,66,945 candidates appeared for the exam. At least 7,71,500 medical aspirants qualified the NEET UG 2020. More than 1.21 lakh students registered for the exam in the State and 99,610 students appeared for the exam in Tamil Nadu this year, of which about 57,217 students qualified the exam in the State.

The highest number of qualifying candidates are from Tripura (88,889) followed by Maharashtra (79,974).

Only 2% students from govt, aided schools to make cut in NEET this yr

The number of students from government and aided schools in Tamil Nadu who qualified for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is likely to reduce to just two per cent this year.

About 18,000-odd medical aspirants from these schools were given free training this academic year, and attended the national-level medical entrance exams, according to School Education Department officials.

Seeking anonymity, a senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next that out of the students who attended the training, only two per cent or less would have cleared the test. “The pass percentage might be less due to COVID-19 pandemic situation, as they could not get the required direct classes,” claimed the official.

Of the 17,630 students from government and aided schools who appeared for NEET in 2019, 2,557 had qualified. This accounted for about four per cent of the total students who qualified. This year, it is feared to decline by half.

“I tried my best even after getting coaching from the government. But I could score only 229. I don’t know whether it would be enough for getting MBBS seat,” said K Saravanan from Chennai.

As the results was delayed till late evening due to server crash, the fate of many government school students remains unknown.
