According to Chennai Corporation data, the lone containment zone is in Manjambakkam area (division 19) in Manali zone. “The containment in the area was initiated on October 27. We will remove the containment regulations once the street or area becomes free of new cases for at least seven days,” an official said.
It may be noted that on October 9, the city had 70 containment zones. At one point of the time, the city was totally free of containment zones. Following an increase in new cases, the civic body modified the containment strategies and instructed the field officials to barricade the streets, if they report only two index cases. Earlier, the civic body was barricading the streets, if they reported three or more index cases. The city has more than 39,000 streets.
For the last few days, new daily cases have come down to around 700 and the total active cases in the city also came down to less than 7,000 on Monday, as more than 1,200 persons recovered in 24 hours. During the peak of the pandemic, the civic body had earmarked more than 1,000 streets as containment zones and restricted movement. Initially, streets were blocked if they report even one case.
