40 per cent shops on Marina beach to go to fresh applicants
The Greater Chennai Corporation has invited applications for those interested in running shops on Marina beach. Of the total number of shops that are allowed to function on the beach front, 40 per cent would be allocated to new applicants, it said.

“The civic body has decided to procure 900 smart carts. Once the tender process is completed, the carts will be allocated to vendors as per the order of Madras High Court,” said a statement from the Corporation.
The statement added that of the 900 smart carts that would be operational at the beach, 60 per cent carts would be allocated to existing vendors while the remaining 40 per cent would be allocated to those who do not run shops at the beach now. The move is to create balance between existing and new vendors, it said. Those interested can get application forms from the revenue department office at Ripon Building. The filled-in applications should be submitted between December 21 and December 26 (except December 25). After the scrutiny of the applications, finalisation of received applications would be done on January 8 and carts would be allocated after that.
The vendors should pay monthly rent and maintenance charges to run the shops. There were more than 3,000 shops on the beach prior to the regularisation drive conducted a few months ago. More than 1,450 vendors have identity cards. The civic body had decided to allow 1,900 shops during regularisation, but the High Court has allowed only 900 shops.
