At an event held in Ripon Building, KN Nehru, Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply, handed over certificates to the representatives of the associations. The civic body had selected one RWA from each of the 15 zones, who made extraordinary contributions towards the tree-planting drive.
“Apart from this, five zones, such as Tiruvottiyur, Madhavaram, Royapuram, Anna Nagar, and Teynampet, were felicitated at the event for effectively implementing city beautification works like creating artworks on walls, centre medians and others. Certificates of appreciation were given to zonal officers, executive engineers and assistant executive engineers of the zones concerned.
The civic body, a few months ago, had invited RWAs and corporate firms to take part in the tree-planting drive. As per the records, more than 87,000 tree saplings were planted from May 7 to October 23.
“The Chief Minister allocated funds to implement the Singara Chennai 2.0 project and instructed us to increase the green cover of the city by planting trees. Local varieties are planted so that they can withstand natural disasters like cyclones and tree species are selected based on soil type, the width of the road as well as the availability of water,” Nehru said at the event.
