    CHENNAI: A vegetable vendor who was on his way to attend his wife’s medical emergency was waylaid by a drunk man, who robbed money from his shirt pocket, demanding money to buy alcohol near Saligramam.

    Police sources said that the incident happened last week, on August 29.

    The victim, M Baskaran (42) lives in a rented house at Nalla Thambi street in Saligramam with his family.

    Baskaran makes a living selling fruits and vegetables in a push cart. On August 29, around 4 pm, when he was at work, he had received a call from his wife, Pushpavalli that she was feeling unwell.

    The man tied up his stock in a bag and was on his way home to take his wife to a hospital when he was intercepted by a man near a Tasmac outlet on Arunachalam road.

    “The man told Baskaran that he does not have money to buy alcohol and demanded that he give him money. When Baskaran evaded him, he took the Rs 200 from his shirt pocket,” a police officer said.

    Baskaran raised alarms after which the other person took a knife he was carrying and threatened him that he would attack him if he raise his voice or inform police about this and fled the scene.

    Virugambakkam Police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for the suspect.
