11-year-old dies while enacting suicide drama in Puzhal

CHENNAI: A 11-year-old boy allegedly enacting a suicide act to his brother, after watching a television serial, died after the noose he tied around his neck tightened, leading to his death at their house in Puzhal on Saturday evening.

The deceased was identified as J Karthik, a Class 7 student at a government school nearby. Karthik lived with his elder brother, Ramsaran (13) and mother, Amudha at a house in Kamarajar Nagar 8th street in Puthagaram near Puzhal.

Police said that Karthik’s father, Jayaraman died few years ago due to health complications, after which Amudha was raising the boys alone, working at a garments store in Anna Nagar.

The family had recently built a house in Puthagaram and moved there, police sources said. On Saturday evening, Amudha was away at work when the incident happened.

The boys were playing and during the course of it, Karthik had told his elder brother that he would enact suicide as shown in TV dramas. He had set up a stool and used a nylon rope and was enacting the act, when the stool slipped and fell down. His elder brother, Ramsaran could not retrieve him immediately and he went outside to call neighbours for help. Karthik was rescued and moved to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Puzhal Police registered a case and are investigating.
