CHENNAI: To create awareness about rainwater harvesting during the monsoon among the public, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metrowater) has appointed 'Water Volunteers'.

A Metrowater statement said that booklets and notice bills about constructing rainwater harvesting structures are being distributed to the public as a part of creating awareness.

"Measures have been taken to renovate rainwater harvesting structures in government offices, government hospitals and government schools.

Moreover, measures have been taken to create new rainwater harvesting structures and renovate existing structures in residential buildings, private hospitals, movie theatres, marriage halls, schools, colleges and malls," the statement added.

In continuation with the measures, 'Water Volunteers' have been appointed under Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihood Scheme. The volunteers will visit streets that are allocated to them to meet residents and create awareness of rainwater harvesting.

Meanwhile, State Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department Minister KN Nehru and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister PK Sekar Babu flagged off an awareness rally in an event held in Chennai on Saturday.
