Banned plastic seized from 4,888 commercial establishments in Chennai
The field survey carried out by the Corporation officials in 15 zones during a two-week period from 26 September to 09 October, 2022 coverred a total of 12,883 commercial establishments.
CHENNAI: At least 1,667 kilograms of banned plastic items were seized from the 4,888 commercial establishments in the areas covered by the Greater Chennai Corporation and a fine of Rs 13,38,400 was imposed.
The field survey carried out by the Corporation officials in 15 zones during a two-week period from 26 September to 09 October, 2022 coverred a total of 12,883 commercial establishments.
A total of 28 types of banned plastic products from manufacturers, sellers and users are being confiscated and fined.
A press release from the corporation stated the usage of single-use plastic products are banned along the Marina beach as they end up in the sea harming marine biodiversity.
In order to control such huge environmental damage, field survey is being carried out on behalf of the Corporation and plastic products are frequently confiscated.
During the last 15 days of field inspections at Marina Beach, plastic items were confiscated from shop owners who used banned plastic and a fine of Rs 1,000 was imposed.
Also, a fine of Rs 3,100 has been imposed on the shop owners who do not keep garbage bins and the public who throw garbage in the Marina beach area.
A field survey conducted at Elliots Beach in Besant Nagar resulted in confiscation of plastic goods. A fine of Rs.8,800 has been imposed on shop owners who do not keep garbage bins and members of the public who dump garbage.
