CHENNAI: Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has instructed its drivers and conductors to immediately stop bus of students travelling on the foot board or dangerously and advise them against such travel.

"If students refused to listen to the advice of the crew, the driver should stop the bus on the road side without affecting the traffic and the nearest police station or police emergency number 100 should be informed along with the MTC headquarters," MTC general manager (Operation) has instructed in a circular dated October 18.

The circular reiterated that it is the responsibility of the bus driver and conductor to ensure safe travel of the school and college students.

The MTC's latest circular comes amid the video of the college students travelling on the footboard and roof of the bus on Koyambedu grade separator.

With rampant incidents of the school and college students travelling dangerously on footboard of the buses, the Greater Chennai Police has initiated special drives to discourage students from avoiding such travel.

Cops have been posted near bus stops to advice the students against such travel and in some cases are warned of informing the educational institution about such students.
