Reporter's Diary: Dermatologists in Chennai are busy these days!

CHENNAI: While motorists and pedestrians have their concerns regarding work on storm water drains going on in the city, the problem of the public is just more than driving on these dug-up roads. During an interaction with a dermatologist, this reporter was surprised to know that the storm water drains’ construction works have led to an increase in the concerns of people regarding skin-related issues.
Thanks to the dust and allergens, that cause more acne and allergy-related skin problems, many people are complaining of rashes, irritation and cracked skin. Some people also complain of increased hair fall and other hair-related problems such as dandruff and scalp problems. The dermatologist says the concerns cannot be dismissed as dust and dirt can cause these problems and special care needs to be taken care of while travelling in places that are more dirty and polluted.
The dermatologist said people usually consult about the monsoon-related impact on the skin during these months. Still, with the storm water drain works going on, more people are experiencing skin-related problems these days. Moreover, the dermatologist says people are choosing to wear masks outside not because of the fear of getting infected with COVID-19 but to stay protected against the dust and prevent skin from being exposed to allergens and dust. The completion of storm water drains would not be a respite from floods but a relief for those concerned otherwise.
