CHENNAI: Chennai and its suburbs received heavy rainfall from midnight till early morning on Monday as the northeast monsoon is likely to onset over south east peninsular region on October 15 – 16.

Twenty-five districts Including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Thiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Karur, Tiruchy, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagappatinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi will likely receive rains till 10 am.
Red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall was issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts on October 16 and it is likely to record more than 20 cm in a single day.
Following the onset of northeast monsoon that's expected on October 15-16, a low-pressure area is likely to form over Bay of Bengal.
Additionally, Orange and Yellow alerts has been given for Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore.
