CHENNAI: Financial education is likely to be a mandatory course to all the undergraduate engineering and vocational students of Anna University and affiliated colleges from the coming academic year.

A senior official from the Higher Education Department said that the financial literacy for technical students was essential for not only managing their money effectively during the academic years but it also sets a strong foundation to manage financial aspects when they start business on their own.

“At present, engineering and other technical students have to pursue a separate course in finance only after completing their UG. It consumes lots of their time and energy. Therefore, it was decided to introduce a comprehensive finance course as a part of the technical curriculum,” he added.

The academic committee has been exploring suitable areas for including the course in the last semester. “This course will be designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions and become self-sufficient,” he added.

The course will cover most finance topics such as planning, banking in India, concepts of banking, basic investment objectives, saving alternatives for a common investor, insurance, stock markets and mutual funds. The syllabus will be derived by the university’s academic committee of financial experts and industrialists.

“The duration of the proposed finance course will be decided once the curriculum is fixed. Marks, which were scored by the students in the financial course, might reflect in their UG degree certificate. The syllabus will change from time-to-time according to the industry requirements,” he pointed out.
