One of 5 Bengal migrant workers who fainted at Chennai Central to go through dialysis
Though his health condition is not critical, the hospital authorities say that he needed additional cycles of dialysis and is kept under observation at the hospital.
CHENNAI: One of the migrant workers from West Bengal who fainted at the Chennai Central railway station due to starvation, Sathya Pandit, remains under treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for additional cycles of dialysis.
This falls in the aftermath of another migrant worker, Samar Khan, who passed away due to renal failure despite treatment, on Monday evening.
His mortal remains were sent to West Bengal on Wednesday.
Hospital sources said Sathya Pandit, however, is out of critical condition currently, recovering gradually and requires monitoring. But, he is advised to go through additional cycles of dialysis. He was suffering from severe dehydration and diarrhoea when admitted to the hospital.
So far, no family members or attendants of the patient have come to the hospital. Caregivers arranged by the hospital authorities are taking care of him.
Five migrant workers had fainted at the MGR Chennai Central station on September 16 due to starvation and were admitted to RGGGH. Three of them have been discharged since and have returned home.
They had come to Chennai in a group of 12 workers searching for agricultural work. Upon arrival, the workers did not find any employment opportunities in Chennai and remained at the railway station for a few days. They did not have the money to return home or to be able to afford food.
All the other migrant workers have also returned to West Bengal after being kept in the corporation shelter home for a few days.
