GCC allots 15 zones to dump construction material waste

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) carries out mass cleaning drive every Saturday across the city to remove garbage, debris especially near the water bodies.
The civic body allotted places to dump construction material waste in all the 15 zones, and those who violate the rules, and dump debris in public places would be imposed with a penalty.
Public should dump only a limited quantity of debris in the allotted areas, and those who dump less than 1 tonnes of construction waste will have to pay a Rs 2,000 fine to the authorities. People who are spotted to dump more than that a penalty of Rs 5,000 would be imposed against the concerned individual.

Several places have been allotted for dumping construction waste generated at limited quantities including Buckingham canal road in Sathangadu, near Manali zonal office, Madhavaram bus terminus, Mahakavi Bharathiyar Nagar, Chennai Thiruvallur High Road near uzhavar market, Shenoy Nagar, Lloyds colony, and Radial Road at Perungudi.
Also, those who generate more than 20 metric tonnes of construction waste should send the bulk waste generators to recycle centres at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur after approval and fee amount paid to the Chennai corporation.
The local body collects 1,060 metric tonnes of construction material waste across the city.
From January 2022 to August 2023, a fine amount of Rs 1.87 crore has been imposed on those who dump construction waste in public places.
