    Mahabs, as Chennai’s 6th new satellite town, to comprise 25 revenue villages

    Tiruvallur and Thirumazhisai new towns will cover 11 and 17 revenue villages respectively. As many as 12 revenue villages will be part of the new Minjur town.

    As a part of the proposal, a new town development plan will be prepared for Mahabalipuram.

    CHENNAI: Mahabalipuram, which is to be developed as the sixth new town (satellite town) near Chennai, will encompass 25 revenue villages around the artistic, historical and tourist site as the State Housing and Urban Development notified the list of villages.

    During his controversial speech in the State Assembly, when he allegedly skipped certain portions of the speech, Governor RN Ravi announced the creation of a satellite town near Mahabalipuram along the East Coast Road (ECR).

    According to a gazette notification, the revenue villages identified are Valavanthangal, Santhanampattu, Nemmeli, Krishnankaranai, Tirupporur, Saluvankuppam, Pattipulam, Thandalam, Vengaleri, Alathur, Karungulipallam, Paiyanur, Sirudavur, Adigamanallur, Karanai, Kunnappattu, Panjanthiruthi, Dakshinavarthi, Amur, Porundavakkam, Kokkilimedu, Mahabalipuram, Poonjeri, Kadambadi, and Perumaleri-Vadakadambadi-Nallanpillaipettral.

    The department has also requested any inhabitant or any local authority or institution in those areas to submit objections/suggestions in writing on the proposal to the government within two months from the date of the publication of the notification.

    “The objections or suggestions, if any, which may be received within the said period, will be taken into consideration before pursuing further action in terms of sub-section (4) of Section 10 of the said Act. Objections or suggestions, in writing, shall be addressed to the Principal Secretary to Government, Housing and Urban Development Department, Secretariat, Fort Saint George, Chennai-600 009,” the notification said.

    Filled with Pallava-era sculptures, the department has decided to develop the new town to promote tourism by preserving the ancient architecture. As a part of the proposal, a new town development plan will be prepared for Mahabalipuram.

    Apart from Mahabalipuram, the government has taken measures to create new towns in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Tirumazhisai and Minjur. The new town of Chengalpattu will cover 60 revenue villages and Kancheepuram new town will cover 17 revenue villages. Tiruvallur and Thirumazhisai new towns will cover 11 and 17 revenue villages respectively. As many as 12 revenue villages will be part of the new Minjur town.

    As per new town development rules, the new town plans will address transit-oriented development, tourism and waterfront development, water resource augmentation plan, solid waste management plan, heritage conservation plan and accessibility to urban services.
