MADURAI: Twenty-two tamers among thirty-three persons were injured during Jallikattu organised at Kalaignar Centenary Eruthazhuvuthal Arena at Kilakarai near Alanganallur in Madurai district.

Scores of spectators from various places thronged the arena to watch the second run of the event in action.

P Moorthy, the Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration, in the presence of Revenue Divisional Officer RD Shalini, flagged off the event after an oath-taking ceremony by the tamers.

Amid cheering spectators, 851 bulls lined up from various parts of the Madurai East constituency entered Vaadivaasal, and steered through the arena challenging the tamers who stood by the vadivasal trying to get hold of the bull’s hump.

Sporting colourful jerseys in successive batches, the tamers gave their best in the sport. Those who showcased exemplary skills in the contest won prizes including a gold coin, a bicycle, a mixie, and a mattress.

According to District Health Officer P Kumaraguruparan, seven teams of doctors screened tamers as per standard procedure before every round of the event. A total of 414 tamers were screened and 10 out of 414 were rejected because they did not meet the criteria.

Besides tamers, six bull owners, four helpers, and a spectator also suffered injuries. Among the victims, five suffered major injuries and were referred to Government Rajaji Hospital, Dr Kumaraguruparan said.

Animal Husbandry Department sources said out of the 853 bulls screened by teams of veterinary doctors, two bulls were rejected. During the event, a bull suffered a minor injury and was treated instantly.
