CHENNAI: The Madras High Court(MHC) on Tuesday convicted minister K Ponmudy and his wife P Visalatchi in a disproportionate asset (DA) case and court also set aside Villupuram special court's verdict acquitting them from the case.

Justice G. Jayachandran observed that the segregation of the income of Ponmudy and his wife by the trial court is erroneous and allowed the appeal filed by the DVAC in 2017.

The judge also directed the registry to serve notice to the accused including Ponmudy and directed them to appear before the court on December 21.

In 2011 the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti - Corruption (DVAC) Villupuram has booked Ponmudy and his wife in a DA case. DVAC alleged that Ponmudy and his wife had amassed Rs.1.79 crore disproportionate to their known sources of income during the check period between April 13, 2006, and March 31, 2010, when Ponmudy was the minister for higher education department.

However, the special court in Villupuram acquitted Ponmudy and his wife from the DA case.

Challenging the verdict DVAC moved MHC in 2017 to set aside the acquittal order.
