CHENGALPATTU: A goods train derailed near Paranur railway station on Sunday night.
A goods train with 40 coaches heading towards Chennai from Tuticorin derailed near Paranur railway station on Sunday night.

The coaches were loaded with iron rods and metal sheets. Around 11 pm when nearing the Paranur railway station near Chengalpattu 10 coaches of the train derailed and the rods fell off the train. Police said since the rods were heavy it damaged the rail tracks. The railway officials and staff from Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram who rushed to the spot started taking steps to lift the compartments and repair the broken tracks.
Since the rail tracks were damaged in Chengalpattu, the EMU services are being operated only till Singaperumal Koil. The trains to Chennai Beach are also starting only from Singaperumal Koil.
Following the accident, all the EMU services were delayed for up to one hour from the morning. The commuters said that there were no proper announcements given at the railway stations regarding the delay. Many students and workers were put to suffer because they could not reach the schools and workplaces. They said that the station master and ticket counter staff are also not providing a proper response when asked about the delay and timings of the train. Railway officials said that the tracks would be repaired and train services would resume normally by evening.
