CPM will foster Left unity to eliminate BJP-RSS, vows Prakash Karat at Madurai meet

Karat said the ruling party represents the Hindutva corporate nexus that is closely aligned to US imperialism. He said that in its third term, the government is displaying "neo-fascist characteristics", which entail the constant targeting of the Muslim minority.

MADURAI: Only the Left has the ideological wherewithal and conviction to fight and counter “Hindutva neo-fascism”, and can lead the fight against imperialist designs on our country, and the CPM will work toward strengthening Left unity to develop a democratic alternative to the BJP-RSS, CPM interim coordinator Prakash Karat said while addressing the inaugural session of the 24th party congress of CPM in Madurai on Wednesday.

He reiterated that the Left is the only consistent force that can uproot neo-liberal capitalism by firmly defending the interests of the working people.

Slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, Karat said the ruling party represents the Hindutva corporate nexus that is closely aligned to US imperialism. He said that in its third term, the government is displaying "neo-fascist characteristics", which entail the constant targeting of the Muslim minority.

This state of perennial violence and intimidation directed against the Muslim community is part of the drive to create a permanent communal divide and to effect the Hindutva consolidation.

Further criticizing, the CPM leader said the Modi government has become a byword for crony capitalism as it seeks to privatise more sectors and provide new areas to big monopolies for their profit maximisation.

Even though the BJP lost its majority in the Lok Sabha and the NDA, which does not command a two-thirds majority in either House of Parliament, it did not stop the Modi government from delivering an authoritarian regime, he said, adding, there's blatant discrimination in the allocation of funds to states.

Citing these, Karat said the CPM would renew its commitment to join hands with all secular forces to forge the Left unity and fight against the BJP and RSS. Hence, let us work together to build a new India on secular, democratic, and progressive lines, aimed at people’s democracy and socialism. Senior leaders of the Left parties attended.

The senior Left leader also said that the party congress will address the prime issue of how to increase the independent strength of the CPM, as he emphasised strengthening Left unity.
